The Story

In 1951, Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi created Akari Light Sculptures—an art series crafted from washi paper and bamboo. With over 100 light sculptures of the table, floor, and ceiling varieties, the collection was dubbed Akari, a Japanese word for light and clarity. Each lamp is produced diligently in the Ozeki workshop, a Gifu-based family business. These paper lanterns have gained global fame among design aficionados for their distinctive and whimsical shapes. They cast a high-quality, gentle, and diffused light.
